To Max, In Honor Of "National Puppy Day"

Have You Celebrated Your Puppy Today?

A Tribute To Max

I haven't always been a dog lover. I've always thought puppies were cute, but large dogs scared me. I know it's because I never had a pet while growing up. I adopted a kitten from the Humane Society when I was 24 years old. Her name was Sugar, and she was my very first pet. I loved Sugar...right up until the moment I divorced and had to leave Sugar behind. I joke that losing Sugar was the hardest part of my divorce. But life as a single mother and REALTOR® just wasn't conducive to adopting another pet...another mouth to feed...another responsibility.

© Charlieaja | - Work life balanceFor years, my son begged me for a dog. My response was always, "When you're old enough and responsible enough to take care of it, I'll consider it, but until then I have way too much on my plate to worry about a dog." By Christmas of 2012, I couldn't take it anymore. My son was 13, old enough to take care of a dog on his own, and I figured it was finally time. So...I researched dogs online, until I found Max. He met all of my criteria (small, indoor, hypoallergenic, smart, and low maintenance). Max was going to be the ultimate Christmas present for my son.

That was the plan anyway.

Max Jones ( problem? I fell in love with Max before I even got him home. I mean...come on! How could anyone not fall in love with this sweet, lovable, mini-Ewok? My husband, that's who! He rolled his eyes, shook his head, set some pretty strict ground rules over WHO was going to take care of Max, and let us know the consequences if we didn't take care of Max ourselves and keep him out of the way.

Max Jones ( didn't last long. In no time, we were all fighting over Max, each of us claiming to be Max's rightful owner, the one that Max loved the most, each vying for Max's attention and kisses. Let's face it, we're all just putty in Max's cute little paws. As he grew, his hair turned white, and his personality grew, and so did his control over our heart strings. And now? This is Max's home...we're just living in it.

Max Jones ( hasn't just changed our lives, he's also changed my business. Before Max, I never truly appreciated why my clients would even consider tailoring a home search around a dog. Now...I totally get it. I will never again question the bond between a dog and my clients. I will work harder to find a home that not only fits my clients' needs, but EVERY member of their family, including the ones that walk on all fours.'s to Max! And to the many ways Max has enriched our family, our lives, and even my business.

Thank you, Max. You have trained me well.
